A Charming Village with a Storied Past
Whether you’re staying at our welcoming Fox Lake Motel, one of the cozy Fox Lake Bed & Breakfast inns, or one of the many Fox Lake Hotels nearby, it’s worth taking a moment to explore the rich history that shaped this scenic lakefront community. Fox Lake isn’t just a great spot for fishing, boating, hiking, and cycling—it’s a place where stories from the past echo through quiet woods, historic buildings, and the shimmering waters of the Chain O’ Lakes.
Native Roots & Early Settlers
Long before it became a beloved vacation spot, the Fox Lake area was home to Native American tribes, particularly the Potawatomi. The rich natural resources, clean waters, and abundant fish made it an ideal place to live. As European settlers arrived in the early 1800s, they quickly recognized the same natural beauty and potential.
The area began to develop as farmland, but its true transformation came with the advent of the railroad.
Hotels and the Rise of a Resort Town
In the late 1800s, the expansion of rail lines from Chicago to northern Illinois turned Fox Lake into a booming resort destination. City dwellers looking to escape the summer heat flocked to the lakes by train, and soon the area was dotted with cabins, cottages, and grand resort hotels.
One of the most iconic of these was the Mineola Hotel, built in 1884. At one time, it was one of the largest frame-built hotels in Illinois and even hosted notable figures like Al Capone. Though it’s no longer operational, it remains a cherished piece of local history and a must-see landmark for visitors.
Fox Lake’s Colorful Prohibition Era
Like much of the Chain O’ Lakes region, Fox Lake earned a bit of a rebellious reputation during Prohibition. Hidden taverns, speakeasies, and rumored mob activity gave the area a touch of drama and intrigue. The remote location, combined with its popularity as a getaway spot, made it a haven for those looking to bend the rules.
To this day, locals love to share legends about secret tunnels and bootleggers cruising across the lake by moonlight.
Fox Lake Bed & Breakfast and Motel Guests Enjoy a Year-Round Playground
By the mid-20th century, Fox Lake evolved from a seasonal vacation town into a full-fledged village with a growing permanent population. But it never lost its identity as a lakeside retreat. Today, visitors still come to enjoy the Chain O’ Lakes—Illinois’ largest inland waterway system—with 15 lakes connected by channels.
Fishing, boating, and snowmobiling in the winter are all part of the area’s vibrant outdoor culture. Whether you’re here in July or January, Fox Lake offers something unique every season.
